To celebrate Idana’s 13th birthday, her mom requested a cake reflecting Idana’s favourite pastime: shopping. And her fave stores are Aritzia and Brandy Melville.
So we created a cake representing her stores and a little whimsy to reflect her age.
While researching the stores and the style, I found that Aritzia has an amazing series of shopping bags, each with a unique and incredible photograph spanning the entire bag. I loved all of the photos in the nature series.
Credit must be given to the photographer that created these amazing images: Randy Martin. Check out his site for the entire series.
After much deliberation (the photos were all so amazing!), I finally chose the image of the girl in the boat on the lake. I based all of the colours on the cake to coordinate with the colours in the photo.
Brandy Melville’s bags were not quite as inspiring, but I loved the repetition of the hearts in the logo variations and in some of the clothing styles. I thought the whimsy of the heart shape was ideal for a 13-year-old’s birthday – it gave the right touch of playfulness and innocence. So I incorporated the heart into the cake design, in shades of blue, all over the cake.
We started with a 12″ round strawberries and pastry cream cake, iced it in buttercream, and then covered it in the palest grey-blue fondant.
The shopping bags were constructed out of pound cake and chocolate buttercream, then iced in buttercream.
I printed the Aritzia logo and image, as well as Brandy Melville image, on edible rice paper. I applied the edible image to fondant, and then panelled the fondant pieces onto the bag shapes. The “tissue paper” is all ruffled fondant. And I added a fondant rope for the bag handles.
The “bags” were placed on cake boards cut to the size of the bag, then placed on the cake.
We finished the design with ombre blue hearts all over the cake, and included a large heart on top with Happy Birthday messaging and Idana’s age. Everything on this cake is completely edible.
Happy Birthday Idana!
